By: Tony Flynn What have the following got in common, and no, it's not a trick question.
- The Mayo Foundation
- IBM
- Eccles
News has just come in that The Mayo Clinic and IBM have pioneered advance early- detection of brain aneurysms, thus preventing deadly ruptures of the blood vessels in the brain. This will help radiologists detect aneurysms with far greater speed and and accuracy.
What has this got to do with Eccles though?
William Worrall Mayo was born in Eccles in May 1819 and baptised at Eccles parish church in October 1819, before emigrating to America in 1845.
He received a degree in 1854 and then moved to Rochester, Minnesota in 1855 where he stayed until his death in 1911.
His two sons William James and Charles Horace both became surgeons, they organised a co-operative group clinic of specialists which became known as The Mayo Clinic. In 1915 this became the Mayo Foundation and today has over a thousand staff physicians, surgeons and scientists.
They were invited to a medical conference in Manchester 1929, here they commissioned Francis H. Spear to design a window at the west end of the north aisle of Eccles parish church in memory of their father.
This was unveiled in July 1929 by The Bishop of Manchester with the two brothers in attendance and a packed congregation.
So there you have the connection, I would urge anybody passing the parish church to go in and have a look at this remarkable dedication to an equally remarkable man.

I visited Eccles Parish Church yesterday to look at the Mayo Foundation windows and found them to be marvellous examples of stained glass work, well worth a visit and an interesting story. |
