by Jo Carlon, Salford artist
Shelagh Delaney had a big impact on my life. I saw the play A Taste of Honey for the first time when I was about 15 and loved it. I have watched it many times since. Shelagh highlighted the housing provblems in areas like Salford in a much more subtle way than Cathy Come Home. The play was poigniant look at working class life in Salford.
It was written in roughly two weeks. She was a very perceptive woman.
It touched upon so much such as the housing problem as mentioned before, our predudices, lack of work, and a small snapshot of working-class life in the north.
She contined to work on classics such as Dancing with a Stranger, the Ruth Ellis Story, again, beautifully written.
She taught me that it doesn't matter where you're from there is always hope.
She will always be always be an inspiration due to her ability to connect with the audience through her wonderfully-constructed and complex characters, who display such elegance and raw sadness.
Ive gone on a bit but she is historical Salford Class to me.
A talent that will never be forgotten.
