Posted by Editor on 7th December 2009 at 03:58 PM Eccles Christmas "lights"
E Scrooge Tis the season to be jolly, with this in mind I decided to have a look at the Eccles Christmas Lights on Sunday evening.
What a disapointment, admittedly the Town Hall has a half decent flashing light display, where is the xmas tree that used to be hung outside the Town Hall? and the crib?
Eccles Gateway Library has nothing, presumably the building's lights are considered festive enough without going all christmassy.
Along Church Street is a single string of coloured light bulbs, presumably low energy ones, however they are strung along the new bus station, illuminating the dismal scene that passes for a bus station.
Outside the closed Hare and Hounds is a tree bereft of leaves but strewn with blue light bulbs which adds to the rather sombre mood of Church Street.
But where is the Eccles Xmas Tree? safely out of view from the general public in the precinct which is locked and barred from 7.30pm, talk about on the trail of the lonesome pine!
But what light breaks from yonder window? Huzzah for the residents (well some of them) of Cremer and Ewood House who have managed to put their own window displays on and some have even decorated their balconies with flashing lights, which to be honest are on par with the Council ones.
Nearly forgot West One (yes I know most people have) have made an effort by throwing up some light bulbs, nothing too festive though, don't want that Mall over exposed do we?
Bah Humbug Sir.

Not really. When anonymous comments fill up blog pages and they're allowed to veer off subject it always end in insults. That's unfortunately what you get with giving people free speech. |

I have just returned from Munich, where I spent a pleasent time visiting the Advent Fair. Plenty of stalls selling hot food and Gluhwein,no ugly drunked people giving you a hard time, not once did I feel threatened or intimidated.THEN!!!!back to Eccles, what a bummer, I think they should just pull the plug and stop throwing money at the place, and lets all get out and leave it to all those nice druggy, dreggy types who just want to smash your face in.It makes you wonder who really won? Gunther. |

I think you will find that The Grapes, Duke of York, Bulls Head are still open, the Town Hall pub is currently closed for refurbishment. |
Comment by Guest 16th December 2009

Comment by Guest 16th December 2009

Comment by Guest 15th December 2009
A crib wouldn't survive 5 minutes theses days. They lock and bar the precinct at nig ? Bloody 'ell! |
Comment by Guest 12th December 2009
Was it not vandalised or had some figures stolen from it last year, if so a very sad state of affairs. |
Comment by Guest 12th December 2009
Why no crib outside the Eccles Parish Church?, also there used to be a crib outside the Library and the Town Hall.
The poor showing of the lights in Eccles is indicative of the state of Eccles on the whole, tatty and run down. |

What celebration lights committee?, and why should the community pay for them?.
Also the xmas lights stop at Eccles Cross, why doesn't Regent Street get any of the lights, they always get over looked for some reason. I will gladly donate a 40 watt low energy bulb if it will help. |
Comment by Guest 8th December 2009
Dear friends,
Just to let you know that the council don't pay for the lights in Eccles - they are paid for by the community.
There is a christmas tree hung on the front of the town hall in Eccles - maybe you missed it!!!
Maybe you would like to get involved in the celebration lights committee in Eccles to seek more funding for a Blackpool illuminations in Eccles... |
Comment by Guest 7th December 2009
Ho ho ho Mr E Scrooge. Eccles illuminations more like humiliations. And, why do they stop at Eccles Cross? I B Blitzen |
Comment by Guest 7th December 2009
The council have spent all our money on Swinton and the ice rink!!! at least the precinct make an effort, its not their fault they have to lock everything away due to the pathetic delinquents who would vandalise the decorations after hours. and opening on sunday just to look at the lights, get real that costs money! |
Comment by Guest 7th December 2009
From that photograph the place looks well dodgy!. Floodlights would be more appropiate for safety reasons. |
Comment by Guest 7th December 2009
I am in full agreement with Mr(?)Scrooge about the so called Eccles lights, hardly Blackpool Hallucinations is it?, as for the Xmas Tree in the Precinct it looks nice, but it would be nice to have a peep at it on a Sunday.
Tells a story though when the people from the council flats put on a better display than Salford Council, where is Elvis with his Santa hat on, I remember him from last year.
So all in all a p*ss poor display of Xmas lights for Eccles, just about sums the place up. |
