Philosophy in Pubs - Eccles
By Tony Flynn
We have all at one time or the other, sat around in a pub putting the world to rights over a pint or two, but now a local group called Philosophy in Pubs have gone that bit further. Last night at The Albert Edward pub, Church Street, Eccles around twenty people met for this months debate which was, Why do we join the Army?. Hosted by Paul Duran and Nicola Smith, a lively talk soon ensued as the talk got under way, but not before we were given some interesting facts and figures regarding the British Army. Did you know that a total of 179 British Armed Forces personnel or MOD civilians have died serving on Operation TELIC in Iraq since the start of the campaign in March 2003. A selection of reasons taken from YahooAnswers.co.uk were also given ranging from, to defend our country, to protect innocent people that need our help wherever they are in the world, to get out of a small town where there is no future, and the old chestnuts; to get cheap beer, to learn a trade, travel the world, meet interesting people and then kill them! The evening was run on a very civilized basis with only one person at a time allowed to speak, and questions being noted by Paul Duran, with Nicola Smith keeping a tight rain on the proceedings. The evenings debate seemed to come fairly down on the side of the argument that yes we do need an Army but not one that invades foreign countries, often to support America's foreign policies. The next meeting will be at The Duke of York pub, Eccles, next month and promises to be a lively evening.
