British Gas increase in prices is blatant profiteering and so callous
This increase is absolutely scandalous and is nothing more than blatant profiteering; this comes on the back of a massive increase in profits the last two years running. It seems these utility companies have no social conscience whatsoever, and their timing just before the start of the cold winter, is just so cynical and callous.

They don't seem to care less that millions of elderly and poor people will freeze in their homes this winter, too frightened to use their heating. A record number of cold related deaths have been reported the last two years but again it seems this means nothing to these highly paid Utility Senior Executives who have made this unjustifiable decision. It seems they only care about increasing profits year on year.

As for the Government regulator Ofgem; what a waste of time! The utility companies just ignore their feeble words as they know they are a 'toothless tiger' who have no real power.

Just watch the other big five utility companies follow suit now; as they play follow my leader as in previous domestic electricity and gas price increases. The truth is there is no real competition, the whole privatisation of domestic electricity and gas has been one of the biggest scandals since day one; as they know they can do what they like when they like and no one can touch them. It's an absolute disgrace!

As the cold winter starts to bite think of all the poor and elderly shivering to death in their homes; too frightened to put on their heating as they fear massive Gas & Electricity bills in the Spring; which they cannot afford to pay. Meanwhile the utility bosses rub their hands with glee expecting year on year massive increase in their profit margins. What an uncaring and unfair place the UK has become. Meanwhile today we hear the Government regulator Ofgem, at last have decided to investigate the big six utility companies domestic pricing policy and their ever increasing profit margins; they hope to finalise their review by next March 2011...a bit too late for the many who will have all ready died of cold related illnesses, caused by the freezing temperatures in their own homes...Welcome to modern Britain in 2010...it is has become a cold and callous place to live, how very sad; what does it say about our selfish and greedy society? This review by Ofgem is far too little too late; they won't report until March 2011 by which time the winter will be over; the Utility companies will have made their fat profits and many people will have died of cold related illnesses. It seems the whole industry is without conscience and now puts increased profits before peoples lives... You can just imagine the conversation between the utility bosses; "at least we sent them a few free energy saving light bulbs; that should help the 'poor blighters' keep warm through the cold winter months and keep their extortionate bills down by a penny or two'...lets just think of our fat bonus cheques and the smiles on our major shareholders faces when we double or profits three winters in a row"..."turn up the heating Jeeves! It's cold outside!"..."hmm that's better; well at least we are nice and warm', so who cares? by Simon Icke

EDF have said they will not follow British Gas and will hold their domestic prices of both Gas & Electricity over the winter months at least until 01 March 2011....At last some real competition, instead of all the compainies 'playing follow my leader' usually following British Gas; I wonder what Npower and Eon will do now? Follow greedy British Gas' cynical 'Price Hike' or follow EDF's good moral decision not to take advantage of customers during the cold winter months.

Well done British Gas! You've just conned me. A month ago I switched supplier to you, to 'save money' (your words). I haven't even received my first bill from you yet, and here you are, upping your prices. Ah well, I'll wait to see if the other suppliers jump on the bandwagon and raise their prices too. If you don't end up as the cheapest I'll just switch away from you again. Seadog

My sister lives in France and her company is Centrica (British gas) and her increase is capped at 4% by her Government but me I get a 7% on gas and another 7% on Electric. Just when is the British Government going to stop it.I have not had a pay rise for two years and have just had a 2% rise due in April 2011.

All our utility companies are now foreign owned and these companies are capped in their own countries by their government but not in the UK. They can increase by any amount they like because the more we pay the more the British Govenment gets in Vat and other taxes.

YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT MATE! (And I speak on behalf of all the nation's gas and electricity users). That's the downside of the privatisation of essential services - they're now just a commodity to make money out of, instead of the means by which we all stay alive.
