Entrepreneurs get a Kick-start at Boot CampThe University of Salford has announced a summer Enterprise Boot Camp - an intensive residential course for people looking to start or develop their own businesses. Would-be business moguls will spend four days and nights at the University where their business plans will be pored over by the resident and visiting experts from the University and outside companies. During the course, they will learn valuable skills relating to commercial awareness, entrepreneurial marketing, networking for success and an introduction to financial planning. It’s all part of the University’s Enterprise Academy, which last year, featured graduate designer Emma Anderton as one of the students. Emma had left University and started drawing caricatures for wedding invitations. But after attending the Academy she was able to set up a website for her business and branch out into other areas of work - with new clients from the corporate world. On the course she met Carol Chadwick who runs joinery firm Panel Master UK Ltd, in Haslingden. Carole employed Emma to revitalise the company’s website and create cartoon characters for use in marketing campaigns. Emma said: “The Academy made me realise that my potential market is not just weddings but companies, small business owners and every special occasion possible. “For me, it’s the missing link between leaving university and becoming self-employed. The professional advice given by already successful and accredited advisors should have cost me thousands.” The University’s Elena Vasilieva, who is running the more intensive Boot Camp in association with Leeds University and Queens University Belfast, is sure the new residential course can only improve the students’ experiences. She said: “Last year, attendees like Emma got lots of experience from our classes. But we feel that by staying overnight, they’ll get even more opportunities to focus and discuss their business ideas with the other Academy students.” The Boot Camp runs 23-27 July at the University of Salford. A very limited number of places are still available - the deadline for applications is 18 June, please see the website below for more details.
