Stability and renewed support for small businessesProviding small businesses with stability and renewed support was the subject of a launch event in London today. A year of intensive research conducted by the Forum of Private Business showed that 66 per cent of businesses want external support. Phil Orford, chief executive of the Forum of Private Business, spoke about the changing business landscape, a credit crunch followed by a recession and a period of instability ahead in the possibility of a hung Parliament. In uncertain economic times for small businesses the Forum of Private Business has designed new measures to provide its members with peace of mind in a way that is relevant to the life cycle of a business. The new measures are focused on the idea of tailored support, with eight specific programmes depending on what a business requires. Support available ranges from credit control guides to practical guides relating to health and safety. Members are provided with support that is both easy to access and understand, available in both online and hard copy formats. The Forum of Private Business also provides a number of 24-hour help lines. Speaking about the evolution of the Forum of Private Business, Orford said: "We have always been a representative body but I think we have now become more relevant. I think what we do and what we say is now more balanced; our research is more credible. "We want to engage more with our members so we are given a true and realistic mandate about the issues that are affecting them." Formed in 1977, the Forum of Private Business also used this opportunity to launch its new logo, including a new strapline: "We are the business people – an extension to your team".
