ENER-G is named as National Business Awards finalist
Sustainable energy group ENER-G is among an elite group of top performing UK businesses that have been named as finalists in the prestigious National Business Awards. Salford-based ENER-G is one of ten finalists challenging for the 3i Private Business of the Year category – one of five special awards that can be entered by third-party nomination only. The award will go to the outstanding private company that has best demonstrated exceptional financial returns, strong growth, innovation, and market prominence in its sector. Founded in 1997 by chairman Tim Scott, ENER-G has grown rapidly into a global business that designs, manufactures, delivers and finances energy-efficient and renewable technologies. ENER-G increased annual turnover by almost 30% to nearly £126m for the year to March 2010 and is set to beat that again in the current financial year, despite a planned period of consolidation after rapid expansion and new acquisitions in Italy and Romania. Some 47% of turnover comes from overseas markets which are growing rapidly. Meanwhile, ENER-G is doubling its office space at its UK headquarters in Salford, at a cost of £2m, as well as increasing manufacturing space by 25%, to accommodate further growth. Commenting on reaching the National Business Awards finals, managing director Derek Duffill said: “Being placed in the finals of this nominations-only category is a great accomplishment in itself, though clearly we will be hoping to go one stage further and win the 3i Private Business of the Year award.” Derek Duffill added: “Despite growing in size to employ 780 people, ENER-G remains decidedly entrepreneurial which means we can act swiftly to win and retain business, as well as acquiring new businesses through a dedicated mergers and acquisitions team which is always seeking the right opportunities. We are constantly innovating across the broad raft of our activities and continue to engage the communities in which we operate to help share the benefits of investment and access to low carbon energy.” Derek Duffill and his senior management team will be among more than 1,200 guests expected at the awards ceremony which takes place at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London in November. Well known businesses shortlisted in this year’s National Business Awards include Unilever, Camelot, Marks & Spencer, American Express, Coca Cola, The Co-Operative Group and Kwik Fit Insurance. Other finalists for the 3i Private Business of the Year are: Aquila Group Holdings, Camelot, Schneiders FX, Cheapflights, Neptune, Mott McDonald, Ioko, DCS Europe, and Iceland. Last year's winner was Liverpool-based discount retailer TJ Morris. The total number of organisations entering the National Business Awards in 2010 increased by more than 40 percent compared to last year.
