Video: Eccles student Rion and Man Utd inspire disabled youth
by Tom Rodgers
This is the inspiring story of Rion Broadbent, a 16-year old youth player and volunteer coach for the Manchester United Ability Counts team. He was awarded 'Student of the Year' recently by the Rotary Club of Worsley after being nominated by Salford City College in Eccles. It was in receiving the award that the full situation came into light. Rion was hit with a rare illness out of the blue at the age of 12, whilst performing in the Ballroom Dancing World Championships. Myasthenia gravis is an auto-immune neuromuscular disease which leads to muscle weakness and serious fatigue. And there are only a handful of experts in the study of myasthenia gravis in the world. But despite years in and out of hospitals in Oxford, Manchster and London, Rion has managed to push through the disability to live a normal life. And with the help and support of his family, his school Wentworth High, and Salford City College where he is studying for A-Levels, Rion is helping other disabled children to enjoy their sport through football. We met him, his granddad Ken and David McCormick from the Worsley Rotary Club to find out the full story. Due to problems with spam only SalfordOnline members can now leave comments.
