Chile hit by 8.8 Earthquakeby News Team One of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded has hit the south American country of Chile. The quake measured 8.8 on the Richter scale. By contrast the recent earthquake which destroyed much of Haiti in the Caribbean was of a 7.0 magnitude. It has been reported that the natural disaster has killed over 700 people and destroyed or severely damaged 500,000 homes. The epicentre of the earthquake is recorded as being mere miles away from that of the Chilean earthquake of 1960, which measured 9.5 on the Richter scale. President Michelle Bachelet has promised his people that food, water and shelter is imminent, as thousands are now living on the streets with nowhere else to go. Humanitarian groups and aid agencies are preparing to make their moves to the country, whose people now seriously requires field hospitals to deal with the sick and the injured, rescue workers, beds, clothing and water putification tablets. The European Union offered three million euros (four million dollars) in immediate aid and Australia and South Korea also pledged assistance.
