Oldham Council's £3,000 cost-cutting seminar in Worsley

Oldham Council have shown a breathtaking lack of self-awareness to send 20 delegates to a cost-cutting seminar at the luxury Marriott hotel in Worsley.

The four star-hotel in Worsley Park is popular for weddings and receptions and has a golf course attached to it.

In cost-cutting measures, Oldham Council is set to cut 500 jobs.

The meeting, to “deliver better services in the face of reduced funding” involved 20 local politicians and officers being driven 15 miles to the hotel and country club instead of holding the meeting in their own offices.

A council spokesman told the press that the event, which cost £145 a head was “good value”.

Councils are coming under fire from the Government as they attempt to make serious savings in public money. Large cuts are expected in council budget from whoever wins the next election.

Salford Council has faced its own cost-cutting scandals in recent weeks as it was revealed that £30,000 could be saved on spending on refreshements like biscuits, and that there was a £40,000 yearly bill for bottled water at the Swinton Civic Centre.

As many as 100,000 local authority workers across the country could lose their jobs as budgets are cut, which will be the worst set of job losses for a generation.

I think "places of worship" should be subject to Business Rates. They are simply money raising ventures anyway. Do you think that those 3,000 places would dwindle if it were the case? I do believe they would.

I'm not brilliant at Maths but am I missing something here? Cost of your own offices = ZERO. Cost of luxury Hotel £145. Can someone explain how that equates to "good value"? An example of how bad my Maths is ... The maths teacher asked me .... "If you had five pounds in one pocket, and ten pounds in your other pocket, what would you have?" I replied "someone else's trousers on!"
