£1.2m charge for Expenses inquiry
House of Commons authorities have revealed details of the £1,183,207 spent on the audit of MPs expenses.
£870,784 was spent on “work commissioned” by Sir Thomas Legg’s audit of MPs allowances, while £5,889 went on office supplies and £306,534 on staff. It has previously been revealed that Legg himself was paid £142,000 of this in personal fees. The breakdown of costs was given in a parliamentary answer given to Labour MP Frank Field. Commons authorities also revealed that a further £19,150 has been spent on the process of MPs appealing against Legg’s findings. Work commissioned by Sir Paul Kennedy has cost £18,327, with an additional £643 spent on travel and £180 spent on office supplies. MPs were asked to pay back just over £1.3m by the Legg review. The combined cost of the audit of expenses and the subsequent appeals process run by Kennedy so far is £1,202,357.
