The London Eye Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary
On Tuesday the 10th March the UK’s number one paid-for visitor attraction, and the world’s largest cantilevered observation wheel – The London Eye – celebrated its 10th birthday with a spectacular light show. ABOUT THE LONDON EYE • At 135m, The London Eye is the world’s largest cantilevered observation wheel. • It was conceived and designed by Marks Barfield Architects and has won over 80 awards for national and international tourism, outstanding architectural quality and engineering achievement. • Since 2000, it has attracted over 36 million visitors – making it the UK’s number one paid-for visitor attraction. • Each capsule holds 25 people, who are free to walk around inside the capsule, though seating is provided. • It rotates at 26 cm (10 in) per second (about 0.9 km/h (0.6 mph) so that one revolution takes about 30 minutes. • The wheel does not usually stop to take on passengers: the rotation rate is so slow that they can walk on and off the moving capsules at ground level. • The London Eye is owned by the Merlin Entertainments Group - Europe’s No 1 visitor attraction operator, and second largest in the world.
