Six of the best for Salford Road Safety
by Tom Rodgers
Six media students at Salford City College will design Salford's next road safety campaign. The Pendleton Centre students have been backed by Salford City Council, who commissioned the multi-media campaign to be delivered across Salford. The campaign, titled “Think for Yourself,” will highlight the peer pressure put on young people which can lead to drink and drug driving. The project is an initiative of the Salford Road Safety Partnership, run by Urban Vision. The brief given to the students asked for a creative campaign aimed at 17-25-year-olds in Salford. Since 2000, 17-25-year-old KSI (Killed/Seriously Injured) casualties have risen whilst other KSI casualties have fallen. Added to this, the highest casualty rates per head of population occur in the 20-24 age band and the second highest is the 15-19 age band. Cheryl Smith, Head of Media and Film at the Pendleton Centre, said “The students worked on the campaign entirely in their own time and using their own ideas and skills learnt on their media course. We met weekly to ensure the students had everything they needed but otherwise let the students come up with everything themselves. I am very impressed and proud of what they have achieved.” Councillor Derek Antrobus, lead member for planning which includes transport at Salford City Council said, “This campaign is by young people, for young people, and the students have done a fantastic job of using the experiences they have come across in their own lives to warn their peers of the dangers that heavy peer pressure can lead to.” The six students involved in making the campaign were: Maxwell Smalley and Stephen Buckley who have since graduated from college, along with Aleisha Darlington, Madison Plaister, Kieran Leacy and Jack Harrison-Sherlock – all in 2nd year of Level 3 Media at Pendleton Centre.
