World-leading gait analysis researcher appointed
Professor Richard Baker has been recruited from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and the Hugh Williamson Gait Analysis Laboratory in Melbourne, Australia to be the University’s new Professor of Gait Analysis – the study of human walking.

He is the author of over 50 peer reviewed papers on gait analysis, including studies with children affected by cerebral palsy and people with Parkinson’s disease and hip problems.

He will join the University’s School of Health, Sport & Rehabilitation Sciences which hosts one of the best facilities for gait analysis in the country and uses them to treat patients from regional NHS Trusts.

The School also undertakes work for professional sports teams such as the Salford City Reds rugby league team and Lancashire County Cricket Club to hone their fitness and performance.

A Cambridge graduate holding bio-engineering Master’s and Doctoral qualifications from the University of Dundee, Professor Baker is returning to the UK from Australia after eight years.

He has already identified funding and collaborative opportunities he wishes to pursue with colleagues in the School. This includes work on gait problems in stroke and partnerships with industry to drive innovations in the technologies used to undertake analysis.

Head of School, Sue Braid, is delighted with the appointment: “Richard joining us is a reflection of the progress made by the School with regard to research quality, research investment as well as its confidence as a leader in its field.

“Credit must go to Richard Jones, who has single-handedly established the service at Salford over the last six years – creating one of the UK’s best facilities in the process.”

Professor Baker said: “Salford has had a rapidly growing reputation in gait analysis over recent years and I’m really excited about joining the team. There is every chance of developing this area to become an internationally recognised centre of excellence over the next few years.”
