In Vogue: Salford students hit London Fashion Week
by Mark Bright Two Salford fashion students have beaten off the competition from 34 other universities to have their work displayed at London Fashion Week. The event in the capital runs from Thursday 25th to Sunday 28th February, and showcases the country's latest and most fashionable designers. Salford University's Richard Thorner and Emma Liddell were selected from over 100 entries to win the Fashion Access Direct (FAD) competition, a charity which aims to bridge the gap between education and the fashion industry. Said a spokesperson for the charity: "To mark the turning of a new decade, FAD asked students to look back and explore the concept of memory to create a fashion legacy for future generations." The winners of the FAD Competition will be announced on the evening of the event with the first prize being £2,000 and a top industry placement. Two runners up will also receive £1,000 and a work placement. Each finalist will have two outfits in the final - one inspired by personal memory, and the other inspired by the narrative of collective memories and objects. Emma’s entry Presence of Absence explores the loneliness she felt when her brother left home to travel around the USA, while Richard also draws on personal and challenging memories for his inspiration. “Long story short; it’s about me ending up in a foster home and trying to come to terms with it, says Richard. "From looking at the perfect family and wanting what I couldn’t have, I decided to play around with using the negatives of fabrics to create new silhouettes.” Photo: Richard Thorner's entry for London Fashion Week For more information follow the link below.
