Iraq advice lawyer to speak at Salford
A barrister who gave the government his opinion of the legality of invading Iraq and also worked on the Lockerbie bombing and Yugoslavia human rights cases will be giving a public lecture at the University of Salford next Friday (5 March).

He is best known for his advice tendered to the Government in 2002 which advised that an invasion would be legal only if backed by the United Nations or if there was imminent danger of Iraq attacking the UK.

The Government claimed that Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction presented this threat and authorised the invasion.

Sir Christopher’s lecture is hosted by the Salford Law School as the 2010 Lady Hale Law Lecture. Past speakers have included Liberty Director, Shami Chakrabarti and Law Lord, Lord Scott of Foscote.

Alistair Alcock is the Head of Salford Law School. “Sir Christopher has worked on some of the biggest international cases of the past few decades,” he said. His career shows the impact and influence which lawyers can have. He’s a great example for our students and we’re delighted that he has agreed to speak.”

The lecture runs 4.15pm – 6.00pm on Friday 5 March at the Lady Hale Building, University of Salford.

Attendance is free and all are welcome. Register your attendance by emailing s.j.robinson@salford.ac.uk.
