Iphone tops Salford fave mobile list

by Mark Bright

After 2,000 votes were cast in an online survey from the University of Salford - it's official - the iPhone is the most iconic mobile phone of the last 25 years.

The University's Professor Nigel Linge set up the survey to celebrate 25 years of mobile phones in the UK and to help get people interested in communications technology.

And after 560 people cast their 2,000 votes it was the iPhone which secured 13% of the total votes. The iPhone was closely followed by the Nokia 3210 and Nokia 6310 which were released at the turn of the century.

Professor Linge said, "I am not surprised that the Apple iPhone topped our poll, for it became a design classic the moment it was launched and truly transformed the design of mobile phones. Personally though, I'm nostalgic for the Motorola StarTAC which was the world's first clam shell phone but it fell outside of our top ten, being in twelfth place. "

Despite Apple capturing the most votes for one phone, the top manufacturers in the poll were Nokia (five entries) and Motorola (three entries).

"For a long time these two manufacturers were the market leaders," Nigel said. "The Nokia 3210 which finished second in the survey was the first phone where you could change the cover and that seems to have confirmed it's iconic status."

Simon Walsh, co founder of one of Europe's largest mobile phone recyclers www.mopay.co.uk, said: "We receive a vast array of mobiles everyday and the most popular models for recycling are Nokias. They really stand the test of time and remain a popular choice for upgrades. I'm not surprised the iPhone topped the poll - its iconic design has captured the attention of fans across the world."

He's now offering people a chance to see all the phones from the classic 'brick' to the ultra-modern iPhone. A special display of mobile phones tracing their 25 year history and including the top ten voted for in this poll will be a main feature of a Family Telecommunications Exhibition to be held in the Power Hall at the Museum of Science and Industry during the weekend of Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 March 2010 as part of National Science and Engineering Week.

Professor Linge will also be launching a new Manchester Science and Engineering Trail for the mobile phone at the exhibition. He said: "As part of the celebrations of 25 years of the mobile in the UK, we are using an innovative system called QR codes which allow you to receive interesting facts about the role that Manchester has played in science and engineering achievement. All on your camera phone at the click of a button!"

This guide is available free to all visitors and the exhibition runs from 10:00am to 4:00pm on both days.

The complete top ten list and percentage of the vote is:
Apple iPhone (13.5%)
Nokia 3210 (8.5%)
Nokia 6310 (8.4%)
Nokia 5100 range (7.8%)
Motorola Razr V3 (6.5%)
Blackberry 8300 Curve (5.7%)
Motorola 8000 range (5.1%)
