Salford students interview Amir Khan
2004 Olympic silver medallist and WBA Light Welterweight World Champion, Amir Khan continues to provide new opportunities and experiences for young people at his training gym, Gloves Community Centre, located in Bolton. As part of the ongoing partnership between Gloves and Salford City College, an exclusive interview took place at the gym recently, before Khan went back to the USA for his season of training.

Media students from the Pendleton Centre visited Gloves Community Centre on Thursday 4th March to film the reigning world champion in action, as well as to see fellow NVQ Coaching and Sports Academy students honing their training skills there. Students currently studying the NVQ at the Worsley Centre have been working at Khan’s gym to expand their knowledge and skills and to further their qualifications. This was a great opportunity for the students to join forces at the gym and make the most of this successful partnership.

The filming opportunity was part of the Elite Performance Programme at Salford City College, a new initiative to offer exciting opportunities to its talented students. The Elite Media students were put to the test on this special occasion, as was Elite boxer Chrade Chin-Chuck, also a student at the college. Chrade attended the filming day to get some practical advice from Khan and join the interview session with the gym owner. As part of a new Boxing Academy at the college, it is hoped that students keen in the sport, like Chrade, will gain more use from the gym in the future.

One of the Media students who attended on the day, Ben Plummer, said “The experience of filming in a real life situation and interviewing world class celebrities is invaluable and a great taster of the career I hope one day to go into.”

Another student, Bethany Bentham, felt “We get a lot of practical experience on the course but it is so much better to be working on something real. It’s all so exciting!”
