Salford supports National Care Leavers’ Week
The University of Salford is supporting National Care Leavers’ Week (26 October – 2 November) as part of its work to enhance the prospects of young people leaving the care system.

National Care Leavers' Week is co-ordinated by the Care Leavers' Foundation and involves all of the major charities working with care leavers. The campaign asks the professionals and services coming into contact with care leavers to take time to reflect on the barriers that they have to overcome.

The University runs a specially designed scheme for care leavers that provides a wide range of financial, wellbeing, accommodation and career support which is tailored to an individual’s needs. Of the 112 care leavers who studied at Salford last year, only five withdrew.

The support given to Salford students has been recognised by the UK charity for children and young people in need, the Frank Buttle Trust, which awarded Salford the Buttle UK Quality Mark for Care Leavers in Higher Education.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Martin Hall said: “Care leavers experience many difficulties which perpetuate the cycle of social exclusion. National Care Leavers’ Week helps to focus our efforts and to bring the issue to the attention of the wider public.”
