Salford City Academy, as a designated Sports Specialist Academy, has demonstrated their commitment to developing sports opportunities for students by joining the new School Games initiative, which is delivered by the Youth Sport Trust.

As well as launching the School Games this year, Salford City Academy also features as a flagship organisation in the Youth Sport Trust’s promotional videos. These will be screened nationwide to promote the Government’s new structure for competitive school sport.

Following 12 months of work to create a lasting legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Salford City Academy focused on their traditional inter-house sports competition. They attended a Youth Sport Trust conference on the School Games initiative, and Academy staff entered and won a competition to win a visit from a professional athlete for a School Games day!

Having pinpointed the strength of the Academy’s existing programme, the Youth Sport Trust was keen to join athlete Daniel Caines when he visited in July 2011. Daniel is a World, Commonwealth, European and Europe Cup Champion at the 400m and 4x400m relay and has represented Great Britain at the Athens and Sydney Olympics.

The team filmed the full day of events which brought the Academy’s existing programme in line with the Government’s new structure. Alongside the competitive sports, which ensured the inclusion of students of all abilities, the Academy held opening and closing ceremonies, and key staff members were interviewed on the importance and impact of the School Games.

Emma Breen, Salford City Academy’s Director of Community Engagement said:

“We have worked closely with the Youth Sport Trust on a number of projects, so to be chosen to help promote the ‘School Games’ was an honour. As a Sports Specialist Academy we know the importance and impact sport can have on our students and we are delighted at the opportunity to celebrate this on a national scale as well as to feature as an endorsement of the Youth Sport Trust.”

“We aim to build and develop this work in the future with a year round sporting calendar of Youth Sport Trust, school, local, regional and national events to provide even more.”

The School Games is part of the Governments Legacy plans to drive up competitive sport in schools. The full School Games structure is set across four levels and will increase the amount of competitive sport taking place across the school year. From class versus class and school versus school, through to county wide sports festivals and a national event, the first of which is next May.

The School Games is supported by a range of partners including the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Sport England, Department of Health, Paralympics GB and the Youth Sport Trust. Over £100 million of Lottery and Government funding is being injected into the School Games over the next three years.
