Debt First Aid training
Many Salford residents experience money worries and advice agencies are seeing increasing numbers of enquiries about priority debts such as rent and mortgage arrears, fuel debts and council tax arrears.

Many residents cannot access mainstream credit and rely on expensive "doorstep lenders", Payday Loans and in some cases, loan sharks.

The recession and the impacts of welfare reform are likely to have a significant adverse effect on Salford residents and often it is those on the tightest budgets that find it the hardest to cope with unexpected income shocks.

Salford’s Financial Inclusion Strategic Group has commissioned the Money Mentors service to deliver a free one day training session (lunch included) aimed at frontline workers, volunteers and residents who may be interested in becoming community champions. The training aims to build capacity amongst us to support people with basic debt issues before these escalate into crises.

We have called this "Debt First Aid".

The one day course aims to help you;

- develop skills to identify when residents are in debt

- challenge some common myths about debt eg what bailiffs can and can't do

- offer basic help to residents to deal with “simple” debts and debt related issues

- make effective and timely referrals to specialist debt advice providers

Suitable for anyone who comes into contact with residents who may be experiencing money worries. No prior knowledge required.

Please circulate to any colleagues or residents you work with who may be interested.

This training will take place on 9th December 2011 at Eccles Gateway Centre, Community Room 3, 18 Barton Lane, Eccles, Salford M30 0EP (please see attached map and directions). The training is 9.30 am registration for a 10.00 am start with prompt finish at 3.30 pm.

If you wish to book a place on this training please either email myself carron.hampton@salford.gov.uk or telephone me on 0161 603 4199/4165.
