Andy Burnham holds midwifery debate at Salford University
Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham MP held a lively debate with University of Salford midwifery students as part of a study day which they organised themselves to focus on topics which affect their work. The day was organised by third-year student Julie Haigh, who contacted Mr Burnham, her local MP, to raise issues around midwives and the best care for mothers and their babies. The MP, who revealed he had shadowed a midwife in London as part of his Parliamentary role, told the audience of more than 100 students that nationally midwives had been quite successful in getting a voice with politicians but that individuals should work hard to raise awareness of the issues with their local MPs. The discussion covered how to measure women’s satisfaction with antenatal and midwifery, targets, issues around local hospital closures, funding cuts and the nationwide shortage of midwives. Mr Burnham advised them to target the commissioners of maternity services to present evidence and influence decision-making. And he undertook to introduce a group of students who had done research revealing problems around antenatal and maternity care for women in prison to the relevant minister to make sure the issue was raised and addressed.
