Oakwood High students in Salford Go Global
Students at Oakwood high school have embarked on a project that aims to raise money to fund schools in Laos, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. The entrepreneurial students have set out to raise money through a series of enterprise projects designed and managed by themselves. On Wednesday 11th January, pupils and staff from Oakwood High School took part in a 'Go Global' workshop co-ordinated by Angelina Adams, Head of iNet/Regional Networks (Eastern), the Schools Network. The pupils were introduced to the 'Go Global Challenge' the aim of which is to help children in countries such as Laos, Nepal and Sri Lanka, and give them the opportunity to learn by funding schools and providing a range of support such as the provision of basic equipment like reading books. The pupils worked in teams coming up with enterprise ideas which they could develop to help raise funds for the Challenge and make a difference to the lives of other young people. The groups developed their idea, thought of a creative product name, designed logos and considered how they might produce and market their 'product'. The final session of the day saw each team give a 'Dragon's Den' style pitch to their peers. All the students participated well and there were some real stars in the group who contributed fantastically and gave some insightful reflections in response to the activities. By the end of the day the 5 groups had come up with some great Go Global project ideas which they hope to take forward in the coming weeks Ideas included: A school calendar, T shirts, printed canvasses and a story/comic book. One of the most popular ideas was the calendar. Oakwood intend to sell the calendar to parents, staff, visitors and pupils from their reception or via the website. It will include pictures of the school and students and will be marked with school holidays and other useful school information. RMT teacher Mr Bailey said “the project has been a great experience for our students. They have got a real understanding of product design, production and marketing. Working as part of a team to identify a problem and design a solution to it will really help hone their enterprise skills as well as helping less fortunate children across the world” Photo: Oakwood students helping out.
