Video: Salford student beats 60,000 to become only European contender for world title
Sarah Davies from Wigan has beaten 60,000 people to become the only person from Europe in the running to become ‘ambassador of the world’.
The 21-year-old University of Salford student of Biomedical Science is one of the final 16 candidates left in the Your Big Year competition, an event created by the Smaller Earth Initiative.
Through a series of tasks with themes of entrepreneurship and global citizenship, applicants will compete to win a year-long trip to five continents meeting community and world leaders.
Your Big Year is a featured event of Global Entrepreneurship Week, the world’s largest celebration of the innovators and job creators who drive economic growth and expand human welfare.
At the end of last year Sarah beat 60,000 applicants from all over the world to enter the top 111 selected by the judges at Smaller Earth.
She then completed a series of tasks – including attending the “Entrepreneur First” event at Manchester Business School and creating the above video on how she would positively impact the world by 2020.
“I didn’t even apply at first because I thought that I wouldn’t go very far given the final prize,” Sarah said.
“It’s been incredible so far, making so many friends from different countries and receiving international support.
“This competition opened up so many doors in terms of experience because it showed me how much I can do with my life.”
The judges then chose the 16 most inspirational people to be flown to Liverpool for the Global Entrepreneurship Congress in March 2012, where they will face a new series of tasks, both individually and in groups.
“I’m very excited to take part in the final stage of the competition where we will have the chance of networking with really important entrepreneurs.
Whether I win or lose I want to get more and more involved in international volunteering.”
The ultimate winner will be announced on March 15 in Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral.
