The Walworth Farce - The Lowry, Tue 15 – Sat 19 Sept.

Hilarious, horrifying and ferociously entertaining The Walworth Farce delivers an achingly tender insight into what happens when we become stuck in the stories we tell ourselves about our lives.

As the play opens, it’s 11 o’clock in the morning in a council flat on the Walworth Road in London. In two hours’ time, as is normal, three Irish men will have consumed six cans of Harp, fifteen crackers with spreadable cheese, ten pink biscuit wafers and one oven-cooked chicken with a strange blue sauce. In two hours time, as is normal, five people will have been killed.

From Galway to Edinburgh, from London to New York, The Walworth Farce has wowed audiences everywhere. Currently on an extensive world tour, theatre company Druid returns to The Lowry (The Cripple of Inishmaan, 2008 & The Playboy of the Western World, 2009) with this remarkable and compelling play by Enda Walsh.

Enda Walsh’s plays include The New Electric Ballroom (Fringe First Winner Traverse, Edinburgh; Riverside Studios, London), Chatroom (National Theatre), Disco Pigs (Traverse, Edinburgh; West End), Bedbound (Royal Court) and The Small Things (Menier Chocolate Factory). His screen work includes Disco Pigs and last year’s Cannes d’Or winner Hunger, co-written and directed by Steve McQueen.

Druid was founded in Galway in 1975 by graduates of the National University of Ireland, Galway, Garry Hynes, Mick Lally and Marie Mullen - the first professional theatre company in Ireland to be based outside Dublin. In the past fifteen years, Druid has premiered 23 new plays, 14 of which were the professional debut for the writer, demonstrating the company’s commitment to new writing. Druid passionately believe that audiences have a right to see first class professional theatre without having to travel long distances outside their own communities. Since 1978 the company has toured to every nook and cranny in Ireland and since 1982 has toured extensively overseas.
