Rare Lowry paintings go on show

A painting that has been unseen for over half a century will be displayed for the public's pleasure at the Lowry.

The oil on canvas scene - entitled The Auction - is part of LS Lowry's mid-career work, produced in by the Salford artist in 1958, but has not been seen in Salford since 1959.

A drawing of a very similar scene to The Auction (1958), made by Lowry in 1956, is said to depict a Manchester auction attended by the artist. Many of the people in the foreground of this vast auction room seem to be passers-by, oblivious to the sale taking place.

It was last loaned to the Manchester Art Gallery over fifty years ago.

This and fourteen others, ranging from early works such as 1934's Stockport and Swinbury Station (1939), to his later work including Beach and Tower (1974), go on show as part of the Lowry Favourites exhibition.

Claire Stewart, Curator, commented:

“The Lowry is delighted to have such a wonderful selection of new loans on display. We always try to bring new works by Lowry to our visitors and regularly refresh our Lowry Favourites display”.
