Northwest New Wave film - Bog Standardby Tom Rodgers In the past year we've seen some great independent film coming straight outta Salford, and Bog Standard is the latest short to make the grade. Written and directed by Manchester-based filmmaker Colin Warhurst and produced by Chris Lane, Bog Standard is a comedy filmed on location (in a toilet) in Salford. But location-spotting proved more difficult than they expected. In September 2009 producer Chris Lane was finding it difficult to locate an office toilet for use as a set in the movie. Chris explained, ‘I had approached in the region of fifty commercial property agents, but as soon as I mentioned that I was looking for a toilet, the line would either go rather quiet, or I’d hear somebody chuckle. "In the end I got through to Canning O'Neil, who thankfully did neither and instead helpfully suggested that I take a look at the Soapworks on Ordsall Lane, which turned out to be perfect for our needs!" The filmmakers behind Bog Standard are part of a creative and social movement in the North West of England called North West New Wave, and strongly believe that if you have an idea and the passion to make it happen then you can make a film, regardless of resources. Bog Standard is a film which echoes these beliefs, and was filmed over the course of a weekend on a low budget, with both Chris and Colin calling in favours from a number of people, to which they are hugely grateful. The Soapworks is one of the largest sites available in the key regeneration area of Salford Quays and lies in close proximity to ‘Media City’, which is set to benefit from the relocation of the five BBC departments, between now and 2011. Colin said, ‘We had access to the whole factory, which was vast, and in a way it’s a real shame that we were confined to a loo for the whole duration of filming!’. He explained: "Bog Standard will be is available to download once it has been on the film festival circuit and a very special premiere is set to take place later in the month." More details on the film can be found on the Bog Standard Facebook page.
