September Heritage Month in Salford
Ever wondered what's hidden behind the windows, walls and roofs of Salford's oldest and most intriguing buildings?

The national project, Heritage Open Days, throws open the doors of a whole range of enchanting and enthralling venues not normally open to the public. Take part in a wide variety of activities from boat trips to heritage walks. Most events are free of charge unless stated.

Salford Cathedral
250 Chapel Street, Salford M3 5LL 0161 834 0333

Salford Cathedral, dedicated to St John the Evangelist, was opened on 9th August 1848. Decorated in a neo-Gothic architectural style, It was the first Catholic church to be built in cruciform shape since the Reformation. The recently refurbished gardens at the side of the Cathedral is a lovely place for people to sit in and relax (open daily). Open as usual from 8.30am - 3.30pm on weekdays and Saturday and Sunday for the month of September from 9am - 6pm.

Salford Lads' Club
Coronation Street, Salford M5 3RS 0161 872 3767

Opened in August 1903 and listed as the best example of a pre-WW1 Lads Club in England. Edwardian Concert Hall, billiards room, sports and boxing gyms. The 'Smiths Room' attracts music fans from across the world. Open Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 September 1pm - 4pm.

Special event: The first vocal concert in the restored concert hall by Ordsall Acapella Singers. Concert will take place on Sunday 12 September at 2pm

Salford Museum and Art Gallery

Stitch draw textile artist Rosie James is making artwork to hang in Ordsall Hall when it reopens next year. Join Rosie in a hands on workshop to explore the techniques she uses in her work and to make your own piece. Have a go at transferring drawings on to cloth, appliqué and drawing with machine stitching. All materials will be provided and no previous experience is needed.

Ordsall Hall - a history.
Salford Museum and Art Gallery,

Join us for a fascinating talk looking at Ordsall Hall's rich history and current restoration. Booking not required.

Talk and Walk.

Meet in the foyer of Salford Museum and Art Gallery for a short tour of the building looking at the architecture and development of the site. After this take a stroll down Chapel Street to call in at
St. Philip with St. Stephen Church and finish of at Sacred Trinity Church.
Please wear suitable footwear and bring a waterproof if necessary. Please note this is a linear walk but regular buses run back to the Museum and Art Gallery. Tour leaders: Naomi Lewis and Ceri Horrocks. Booking not required. Saturday 11 September 2pm start (approx finish 4pm)

Saint Lukes with All Saints, Weaste
Corner Liverpool St/Derby Rd, Salford M6 5YD 0161 736 5819

St Luke's Church is grade II* listed, prominent because of its position and its slender, continental style spire. It stands on a small green hill beside Liverpool Street and is known locally as 'the church on the hill'. Open for school parties on Thursday 9 and Friday 10, Saturday 11 open 10am-4pm with over 40 panels about the churches history and tours of the church. Sunday 12 September is open for tours from 11am-4pm, refreshments served in the parish hall.

St Philip's with St Stephen Church
Chapel Street, Salford M3 6JF 0161 834 2041

Designed by Sir Robert Smirke in 1825, the buildings Greek style is unique in Salford. The view of the church is most impressive, with its bow-fronted porch with iconic colonnade and balustraded parapet and bell tower. There will be a chance to visit the crypt and/or the roof. There will be guided tours and information and at various times and also live music and activities for children. Open 12 - 4pm on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 September.

St Andrew's Church
Chadwick Road, Eccles M30 0NZ 0161 789 1390

Built in 1879 this is a grade II* listed building. It has many beautiful stained glass windows and over 50 examples of Victorian stone work - an amazing assortment of human heads, children, angels, symbols, foliage and even animals. Open Day Saturday 11 September 10.30am - 12.30 & 1 -3pm. There will be tours of the church at 11am & 2pm

Sacred Trinity Church

Sacred Trinity was the first church in Salford, most of the current building dates from 1752. It is a grade II* listed building with many original features. There will an exhibition celebrating the 375 years of the church, created by local people with the help of Chapel St Community Arts and People's Voice Media. The Sacred Trinity Church exhibition is focussed on people's memories and experiences of the church, and include people's stories of Sacred Trinity Parish School, and memories of the flat iron market that used to take place outside the church. Open 12 - 4pm Friday 10 - Sunday 12 September

The City Airport Open Day & FLY IN
Control Tower, Liverpool Rd Eccles M30 7SA 0161 789 1362

The airport has a fascinating history; built in 1928, by 1929 it was the first municipal airfield in the UK to be licensed by the Air Ministry. Relive the story of City Airport on a visit to the Heritage Museum and a guided tour around the site. Entrance Fees: £2 cars, £1 pedestrians(£1 donated to charity) www.bartonheritage.co.uk

Volunteers from the Barton Aerodrome Heritage Society (BAHS) will be running tours on Sunday 12 September lasting 1 hour, at half hour intervals from 10am. Booking forms will be available on the day.

Eccles Station Friends of Eccles Station (Freccles)

On Wednesday 15 September it will be exactly 180 years since the opening of the world's first main line passenger train service from Liverpool to Manchester, via Eccles. There is an Open Day to mark this event on 11 September - when Freccles will be 5 years old. There will be stalls and activities in the station forecourt, plus a theatrical re-enactment of the drama surrounding the arrival of Rocket in the station bearing the fatally wounded William Huskisson, the first railway fatality in the world. Sunday 11 September 10:30am - 2pm

Patricroft Station Friends of Patricroft Eccles Station (FrOPS)

The Friends of Patricroft Station (along with the Friends of Eccles Station) are celebrating the 180th anniversary of the opening of the Liverpool - Manchester Railway, which runs via Patricroft and Eccles. This line is generally considered to be the world's first modern passenger railway. There will be an emphasis on the heritage of the railway and of the Patricroft area. There will be free train travel between the two stations for visitors. Saturday 11 September 11am - 2pm



Salford Civic Centre
Chorley Road, Swinton M27 5FJ

Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Civic Centre. This impressive building with its 38m high clock tower was completed in 1938 and is home to Salford City Council. Numbers are limited so please book your place by contacting Salford Tourist Information on 0161 848 8601

The Court House

This grade II listed building was built in 1849 for the 1st Earl of Ellesmere to house the manorial court of Worsley. Open house Sunday 19 September 1 - 4 pm. Afternoon Tea will also be available from £6.50.
