Local singing star to take centre stage at BBC Proms in the Park in Salford
Salford opera star Jon Christos will be performing in front of his home crowd when he makes a triumphant return to the BBC Proms in the Park spectacular on 11 September. Jon, who will also be hosting the evening's entertainment, is an internationally-renowned opera singer, having starred in operas and concerts around the UK, Europe and the USA. He was educated in Manchester at Chetham’s School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music. Jon said: “Performing in front of my home crowd is always special and I am looking forward to hosting another fantastic night.” He will be joining headline act, Torchwood-star John Barrowman, to perform with the BBC Philharmonic at Buile Hill Park. The all-round entertainer is well-known for his leading roles in the West End, as well as for his appearances on the hit US TV series Desperate Housewives and his new BBC One chat-show Tonight's The Night. Also added to the line-up, and performing for the third time at the BBC Proms in the Park in Salford, is world-class mezzo soprano Juliette Pochin. Juliette has appeared with many of the world’s top orchestras and also featured on the soundtrack to films including Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Star Wars – The Phantom Menace. Juliette commented: “The BBC Proms in the Park in Salford has become an important part of my performing calendar. There is always a great atmosphere and I really enjoy it.” Joining Jon on stage again this year, for an exclusive performance prior to the main show, will be his protege and one of the country’s top young classical sopranos, Jenny Williams. Jenny said: “Performing alongside Jon is always a pleasure and the BBC Proms in the Park in Salford is one of the highlights of my year.” BBC Proms in the Park in Salford is part of the BBC’s prestigious Last Night of the Proms TV coverage, featuring a live link from Buile Hill Park to the Royal Albert Hall. Salford is one of only four locations outside London to feature in the BBC Last Night of the Proms concerts. It will be broadcast around the world as part of TV, radio and internet coverage and include a live link-up to the Albert Hall concert on the night. The Proms in the Park in Salford is a highlight of Salford City Council’s Events to Shout About programme which aims to build on the city’s growing reputation as a world-class visitor destination. Last year, around 8,000 music lovers brought picnics, flags and their singing voices to Buile Hill Park to enjoy an unforgettable evening of popular tunes and rousing classics. The event closed with a spectacular firework display. An estimated six million tuned in to watch BBC coverage of the Proms which included the Salford concert. While 1.2 million digital viewers watched live coverage of Last Night of the Proms concerts across the UK through the red button on their TVs. Cllr John Merry, Leader of Salford City Council, said: “This event is one of the highlights of Salford 's events calendar and tickets are selling out fast.
