Review: How To Get Almost Anyone To Want To Sleep With You -The Lowry, Salford
Writer: by Deborah Frances-White.
Reviewer: Julie Burrow The Public Reviews Rating: Three out of Five. According to her website, Deborah Frances-White is a stand-up comedian, writer and executive coach, and brings all of these skills together for this show, which tutors men and women on how to become more attractive to the opposite sex. And, though the show’s title suggests something less sophisticated (and there is the occasional bawdy comment), this is rather a sweet show. Frances-White intends the show to be empowering and confidence-building, if only by being able to laugh at recognising yourself in some of what she says. I wasn’t expecting the show to be like that. I’ve not seen Frances-White perform before and when the show opened with the audience being asked to raise their hand if they were single or in a relationship, I felt a wave of nausea. As a result of this sharing, certain audience members were matched up and encouraged to get a drink together in the interval. I was hoping she had a back-up plan for the second half. However, Frances-White is very amusing and vehement in what she wants to communicate. She almost implores the females of the audience to adopt new confident personas and she makes a point of ridiculing chauvinism. The second half involved an improvisation with audience members. This section was entertaining, as it enabled the chosen few to show of their quirkiness and unintentional humour, but it began to drag a little, with Frances-White taking a step back. Still, the momentum picked up a little and the audience had clearly had a good night, as well as learning a little. As part of the encore, Frances-White speaks more personally about how she came to write this show and my only objection would be that I would have liked to know it earlier. Overall, an interesting and entertaining show and Frances-White is very charismatic and amenable.
