Future Shock
By our theatre critic Paul Lemon
Hurrah! My first sci-fi play. Hurrah! My first sci-fi play. Set in the 27th century, Future Shock is the story of Laura who is awoken a hundred and thirty or so years too soon from her cryogenic sleep because the money in her trust fund has run out. Why? Well guess what, the banks in the future are just as dodgy as they are now. A woman who only in her yesterday, actually 800 years earlier, banged her toe on the doorstop, clashes from the off with the soulless clone, Nicoletta, who revives her. Nicoletta is all brisk humourless efficiency and too handy with the sedatives when Laura gets angry with her impossible situation. How on earth, which has gone by the way, can she hope to meet up with her lover in the future? The answer is horrifying. With a simple set. It's amazing what you can do with some clear plastic boxes, some fairy lights and some cling film, I was really drawn in the three hander on stage at The Studio. The one hour show would make a brilliant one off TV drama. I loved it. It's a real shame that it wasn't a sell out as more people need to see this terrific play. Future Shock is a definate must see. Ten out of ten from me. The show gets its final performance at The Lowry tomorrow night.
