For more details visit: bbc.co.uk/philharmonic WATERWAY DISPLAY - ARTIST’S REACTION BY DEREK ELAND - IN OUR OWN WORDS: SOLDIERS’ THOUGHTS FROM AFGHANISTAN Until 24th June 2012 Marking the tenth anniversary of the start of the war in Afghanistan, IWM North is presenting an installation by the artist Derek Eland – the latest in the Museum’s Reactions series where artists are invited to display work showing how war shapes lives. The intimate and powerful installation has been created by Eland, who is a former paratrooper turned artist. On public display for the first time, it reflects on individual experiences on the front line of a contemporary conflict. From the remarkable to the mundane, the extraordinary to the everyday, soldiers from 16 Air Assault Brigade recorded their honest and personal thoughts on small pieces of card while on tour in Afghanistan this year. REMEMBERING 9/11 Main Exhibition Space until September 2013 A British Union flag recovered from Ground Zero in the wreckage of the World Trade Center, New York, is on public display for the first time. The flag is two metres in width and is displayed in the Museum’s In the Spotlight exhibit. The flag was officially presented to Great Britain, on the first anniversary of 9/11, by the people of the United States and it was laid on the altar of St Paul’s Cathedral in a memorial service for victims of the attacks. A huge section of steel, 7 metres in height and weighing more than a tonne, recovered from the wreckage of the World Trade Center, is also on display. This is amongst the first pieces of steel from Ground Zero to go on display in the UK. The column, thought to be from the North Tower, formed part of a window section from an external wall. The steel, distorted and twisted, is evidence of the massive force and impact of the collapse of the towers. THE CRUSADER BY GERRY JUDAH Main Exhibition Space until March 2015 IWM North is exhibiting a new sculpture by renowned contemporary artist Gerry Judah. The huge work of art is the first exhibit visitors see on entering the Museum’s Main Exhibition Space. Judah’s new piece has been created in direct response to contemporary global conflict. It reflects on modern day wars but also resonates with the history of world conflict, showing how war has and continues to shape lives. OUTDOOR DISPLAY THE FALKLANDS, 1982 External Spaces from 24th March This unique new outdoor photographic display contains images from the extensive IWM photographic archive. Marking the thirtieth anniversary of the war in the Falklands, six images of the conflict will be shown in huge, 5 metre high frames outside IWM North. Our unique Collections, made up of the everyday and the exceptional, reveal stories of people, places, ideas and events. Using these, we tell vivid personal stories and create powerful physical experiences across our five museums that reflect the realities of war as both a destructive and creative force. We challenge people to look at conflict from different perspectives, enriching their understanding of the causes, course and consequences of war and its impact on people’s lives. IWM’s five branches are IWM London, IWM’s flagship branch with six floors of exhibitions and displays; IWM North, housed in an iconic award-winning building designed by Daniel Libeskind; IWM Duxford, a world renowned aviation museum and Britain’s best preserved wartime airfield; Churchill War Rooms, housed in Churchill’s secret headquarters below Whitehall; and the Second World War cruiser HMS Belfast. First World War Centenary 2014 - 2018 marks the centenary of the First World War, a landmark anniversary for Britain and the world. IWM will mark the centenary by leading a vibrant, four year programme of cultural activities across the country, including the opening of brand new First World War galleries at IWM London in 2014.
