I've thought of another option. Perhaps you could have a communal account for anyone who wants to post anonymously, and change the "Due to problems with spam only SalfordOnline members can now leave comments..." message to say "If you want to post anonymously please log in with the username ***** and password ******". You might have to have less privileges on that account to make sure no one changes the password on it or anything and keep an eye on it to make sure no one writes non-family-friendly stuff in the profile but that ought to stop the spam. It might increase the number of comments because a lot of previous commenters obviously didn't want forced registration.

I guess there's the option of a simpler spam trap such as an easier captcha or a "leave this field blank" field or "1+1=" field. I know it doesn't take long to register but it seems like people don't like being forced to do things. They don't like being forced to leave a name and they don't like being forced to register. The number of comments dropped dramatically when both of those measures came in.

Sorry you don't find this funny Lebowski, but each to his own. So far as our comments policy is concerned we are still under attack from the same source that caused us difficulties a month or so ago, unfortunately therefor we are not in a position to change things. I agree it is a pity that we don't get the same number of comments as before, particularly as it takes only a minute or so to register.

Jeez, this site used to be really good, why are you putting crap like this online?, it's not even funny. Why not consider reviewing the comments procedure, it is puting loads of people of leaving a comment. Have a trial week and if the spam returns, well fair enough, until then it is the same few people leaving comments. Sorry but not good enough, I used to love reading the comments, no matter how bizarre or provocative, at least you were getting a reaction.

Due to problems with spam only SalfordOnline members can now leave comments. Becoming a member of SalfordOnline only takes a minute, just hit the red Join Us button at the top right hand side of the page to create your Personal account.
