Young man fished from Irwell
Very early on Saturday morning, a man who had fallen into the River Irwell was rescued by firefighters.

The freezing waters in the early morning are particularly dangerous, and the specialist water incident unit from Eccles had to be called out alongside crews from Manchester Central and Salford.

At 04:56 hrs fire crews were called to the report of a man who had fallen into the River Irwell on Blackfriars Street, near to the Travel Lodge.

When they arrived fire crews found a 22 year old man stranded on a platform on the river bank.

The man was assisted from the river bank by firefighters using ladders - and treated at the scene for cold water immersion by NWAS personnel.

He declined hospital treatment and was returned home safely.
