Prime Minister visits Salford
PRIME MINISTER David Cameron visited Salford Fire Station this afternoon to meet some of the firefighters who responded to the riots on Tuesday night.
Mr Cameron made the special visit to the station to thank representatives from the emergency services for their efforts and commended them for the excellent work they did in helping to protect and support the communities of Salford and Manchester city centre. During the visit the Prime Minister was joined by County Fire Officer and Chief Executive Steve McGuirk, Chief Constable Peter Fahy and Hazel Blears MP. Following the introductions fire crews were able to give a first-hand account of what it was like to be on the front line. County Fire Officer and Chief Executive Steve McGuirk said: “It was a real honour to meet Mr Cameron, as well as an opportunity for fire crews and our police colleagues to share, first hand, what is was like to be in the thick of the disturbances. “We must not however forget those working behind the scenes - during the disturbances on Tuesday evening our control centre received hundreds of calls deploying fire crews to a total of 351 incidents across Greater Manchester - with a number of these in the Salford and Manchester city areas; ranging from overturned cars on fire, buildings on fire after being ransacked and looted - as well as everything in between which included an incident in Oldham where eight people were led to safety by firefighters. "Everyone worked throughout the night showing nothing but commitment, dedication and professionalism in what was an extremely difficult and challenging situation.” Due to problems with spam only SalfordOnline members can now leave comments.
