Firefighter named for MBE

GMF's Steve Jordan has been named in the Queen’s New Year Honours list 2011 to receive an MBE.

FIRE SERVICE OFFICER RECEIVES MBE FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO CHARITY WORK OVERSEAS

Watch Manager Stephen Jordan from Cheadle Fire Station has been recognised for services to Operation Florian in Macedonia - a UK Fire Service Humanitarian Charity working to promote the protection of life amongst communities in need, world wide, by the provision of equipment and training to improve fire fighting and rescue capabilities.

Stephen is the Project Manager for Operation Florian in Macedonia and has overseen the donation and transportation of fire appliances and equipment to Macedonia. Supported by a team of firefighters from Manchester, and other UK fire and rescue services, training of local firefighters has been delivered in numerous regions over the country to provide essential fire and rescue provision to communities in need.

On receiving the news about being awarded this honour Stephen said: "I am delighted to be recognised in this way and would like to dedicate it to all those who have helped the charity in achieving success in numerous countries, as well as to my family and friends for all their support."

Councillor Paul Shannon Chairman of the Fire Authority said: "I am delighted that Stephen has been recognised for his work in Macedonia - this is a tremendous honour and in receiving this it helps to celebrate the important work of the UK Fire and Rescue Service in continuing to support Operation Florian.”

Stephen joined Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service in 1998 and transferred to Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service in 2002 where he has served in Manchester, Salford, Bolton, Bury and Stockport boroughs.

"Guest 1st & 2nd Jan" - Would you like to post how many hours a week you work? How much of your time off do you spend organising and carrying out fund raising events to help out those less fortunate than us in the UK? How many weeks of your Annual leave entitlement have you given up to work abroad on humanitarian aid projects? If you know firefighters as you say you do, you would know that the 48 hours worked by Operational firefighters are crammed in over a 4 day period of x2 ten hour days and x2 fourteen hour nights. There also many other roles within the fire service where firefighters work a "normal" nine to five, Monday to Friday system which gives them weekends off (that's 2 days....is that loads of time off?) There are also flexible duty systems such as the one I work where I am on duty for 96 hours (42 office hours then on call via a paging unit for the remaining 54 hours. So until you can make fully informed comments I suggest you spend more time looking at how you conduct your life and what do you give back to the community. You are obviously jealous of how highly the fire service is revered throughout the World. If the job is so easy as you make out, why don't you come and join us?..Well done Steve on the award. It is well deserved and it's a shame the article doesn't explain the amount of work, self sacrifice and relentless drive that led to you being nominated for this honour. There are many people that receive this award for just doing their jobs and not enough awarded for sacrificing their personal time and efforts. Steve D

They work 48 hours a week, the guest can't even string a sentence together or put punctuation in the correct place. Well done Steve, you deserve it.
