Fire Service pushes Bonfire Night safety
Have a happy, safe, bonfire night is the message that Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) is sending out ahead of this weekend’s bonfire and firework fun.

The Service is expected to experience one of its busiest bonfire nights in years with November 5 falling on a Saturday.

In the lead up to the event, GMFRS has carried out a comprehensive campaign, using data from previous years to target ‘hot-spot’ areas for anti-social behaviour through to criminal acts, such as using fireworks in a public place.

Councillor David Acton, Chair of Greater Manchester Fire Authority, said: “This year, the Service has targeted thousands of school pupils, educating them about the importance of bonfire and firework safety.

“And it’s been fun – pupils at two schools recorded safety adverts that have been played on five local radio stations across the county. Others have recorded short films showing the consequences of making hoax calls and highlighting dangers of unsafe bonfires.

“We’ve also used Facebook adverts, hosted roadshow events at places like the Trafford Centre and took our caged football unit – a mobile football pitch – out into our communities.”

Continuing, Cllr Acton added: “It can be fun celebrating bonfire night but every year hundreds of people are taken to hospital with injuries involving fireworks and bonfires.

“We would urge people to visit the safe4autumn website to get some sensible safety messages about bonfires and fireworks, ensure that they have a happy and safe bonfire night and also get a chance to win an iPad.”

The night before bonfire night (Friday November 4), @manchesterfire will be tweeting about some of the incidents GMFRS crews are attending; offering the public tips on how to stay safe.

Last year, GMFRS received 468 calls and attended 327 incidents on 5 November.
