Property marking to beat the burglar
Officers from Greater Manchester Police’s Salford Division will be at supermarkets across the city, urging shoppers to beat the burglars and register their property on a free security database.

Neighbourhood Policing Teams will be encouraging people to register valuables on www.immobilise.com. Owners can put details of their prized possessions on a national database that police can access and compare against items that have been found or recovered from suspected criminals.

The on-line service is totally free and is quick and easy to use. Items and households marked as being registered with Immobilise are less likely to be stolen or burgled.

Almost any item with a serial number recovered by police can be returned to the owner if registered on the database. Users can also add photographs and certificates of ownership to their Immobilise account. Once registered users can update their account with details of new possessions, and take off items they no longer own.

As part of Operation Storm, police officers will offer motorists the chance to have their number plates secured with grub screws, free-of-charge, as well as offering crime prevention advice.


Superintendent David Wilkinson from Salford Division said: “A large number of the community visit supermarkets for their weekly shop so it is an ideal chance for us to property mark, secure number plates and ensure crime prevention messages are issued.

Although a large number of residents are making sure their homes are secure, there are still incidents where burglars are entering a house via an open door or window and stealing items. Locking all exits, setting an alarm and a timer light when the house is unoccupied will deter any would-be thief.”
