Salford's burglars feel the wrath of StormA Greater Manchester Police crackdown on burglary saw 191 people arrested in Salford last week (18 to 24 January). Officers from Salford Division joined Operation Storm, a Forcewide initiative to tackle burglary across Greater Manchester aimed at targeting criminals and increasing public awareness of how they can protect themselves from would-be thieves. These tactics included carrying out five search warrants at the addresses of known or suspected offenders and visiting the homes of many of the division’s target offenders. During the week, officers conducted high-profile patrols across the division during which they identified houses that were potentially vulnerable to burglars and gave the occupants advice on how to make their homes more secure. Residents also had the chance to register their valuables on immobilise.com at major supermarkets across the city. Immobilise.com is a free online national database that police can access and compare registered items against property that has been found or recovered from suspected criminals so that they can be returned to their rightful owners. The week of action was organised under GMP’s Operation Storm initiative, which was launched in June last year and aims to drive down burglaries and increase burglary convictions. Superintendent David Wilkinson from Salford Division said: “This is a clear message to burglars and those thinking of offending that their actions will not be tolerated. “Residents can play their part in this fight against these criminals by refusing to buy goods they suspect have been stolen, reporting their suspicions to us either directly or anonymously through Crimestoppers and following simple crime reduction advice. “A third of burglaries are still down to people leaving doors and windows open or unlocked. By locking up, using alarms and keeping burglars guessing by leaving a light on when you go out you can dramatically reduce your chances of falling victim to this distressing crime.” You can also call anonymously with information about crime to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
