East Salford crime down, GMP report
Residents living in the Kersal, Broughton and Irwell Riverside area can feel safer following a successful operation aimed at driving down crime, say police.

Operation Scholar was set up to reduce the number of burglaries, robberies and vehicle crimes taking place between mid November and the end of December. According to figures, burglary went down by 36 per cent compared to the same period in 2008. That is 37 fewer crimes taking place.

Vehicle crime reduced by 25 percent, meaning 54 fewer incidents and robbery went down from 18 incidents to 14 incidents.

During the period, offenders were targeted, high visibility patrols were issued in hotspot areas to deter activity and increase public reassurance during a period of time when traditionally crime levels are high.

Sergeant Dave Stevens from Salford East Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “The results from Operation Scholar are encouraging but I can assure residents and criminals in the area that we will not be resting on our laurels and will continue to target offenders throughout the year.

“May I remind people that although we are doing the best we can, we rely on members of the public for information. Crimes or suspicious activity should always be reported and simple steps such as taking valuables out of motor vehicles, keeping possessions concealed on your person and keeping homes secure will help prevent you becoming the next victim of crime.”

Residents can help keep their homes safer from burglars by ensuring all doors and windows are secure and alarms are set. Use lights, radios and timer switches to make your house look occupied if you go out.

You can also call anonymously with information about crime to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Crimestoppers is an independent charity who will not want your name, just your information. Your call will not be traced or recorded and you do not have to go to court or give a statement.
