Anti-Terror hotline launch in North Westby Mark Bright
A campaign was launched this week to urge residents in the North West to help fight terrorism at community level. Anti-terror police officers are promoting an Every Call Counts' initiative to crack down on neighbourhood-level suspects. Detective Chief Superintendent Tony Porter, head of the North West Counter Terrorism Unit, said: “People hold the key. “It is important that they feel able to contact us if they have noticed anything they think is suspicious. "We have expert officers with significant experience who can assess the information and decide on the most appropriate course of action. “I urge people to continue to help and to use the confidential Anti-Terrorist Hotline 0800 789321 if they are concerned about any suspicious activity. Their information can ensure we continue to tackle terrorism and extremism.” He added: "If you have concerns let us know. We need your help to keep our region safe." Since the creation of the GMP Counter Terrorism Unit, in July 2007 Omar Altimimi was sentenced to nine years for terrorist offences and Yusuf Abdullah was sentenced to three years for proceeds of crime offences. In November 2007, Abdul Rahman pleaded guilty to terror offences and was sentenced to six years in prison. And in January 2008, two men, Steven Kerr Robinson and Wayne Cook, were jailed for a total of 12 years for terrorist offences. People in possesion of mutiple passports, anyone buying large quantities of chemicals or those who come into a large sum of money unexpectedly are among the clues identified by police. Poster and postcards will be distributed to the community with details of the anti-terrorism hotline number - 0800 789 321.
