Salford actors reinforce bogus official message
Actors in Salford have helped raise awareness of doorstep crime and the precautions to take to prevent becoming a victim. The Halliwell Theatre Company put on a performance at a forum for older people at the Pendleton Gateway, giving examples of methods bogus callers use to take advantage of older and vulnerable people within the community. Police in Salford are warning homeowners to be extra vigilant and to be aware of the techniques used in the area. These include distraction burglary, when a homeowner is tricked or distracted into letting an offender gain access to their home, bogus officials and rogue traders. Bogus officials are people who claim to be representatives from a company or authority and rogue traders are people who claim to be able to carry out repairs or home maintenance and then charge hugely inflated fees. Crime Reduction Advisor for Salford Division, Fiona James, said: “The group’s performance is a different way of getting advice across to people. If they can see how distraction burglars and bogus officials work and understand the precautions that need to be taken, it can prevent them becoming a victim to this despicable crime. “My advice is to keep doors and windows locked, before opening the door, stop and ask yourself are you expecting anyone. Make sure the door chain is on and check the caller’s identity. A genuine caller will not mind while you contact their company. If you are in doubt, do not open the door.” If you see anyone acting suspiciously, you can phone your local Neighbourhood Policing Team: Salford North (Swinton and Pendlebury) 0161 856 5228 Salford East (Kersal, Broughton and Irwell Riverside) 0161 856 5127 Salford Central (Claremont, Langworthy, Ordsall, Weaste & Seedley) 0161 856 5084 Salford South (Irlam, Eccles, Winton, Barton and Cadishead) 0161 856 5317 Salford West (Little Hulton, Walkden, Worsley, Boothstown and Ellenbrook) 0161 856 5284 To report crime call police on 0161 872 5050 or for more information visit www.gmp.police.uk.
