Car crime down in Blackfriars

Car crime down in Blackfriars
Vehicle crime has reduced in two former hotspot areas in Salford thanks to a joint operation involving police and the council.

According to figures, vehicle crime on Bury Street in east Salford has reduced from 48 incidents from November to July 2008/2009, to 12 incidents over the same period in 2009/2010. That is a reduction of 75 per cent.

Vehicle crime on Middlewood Street in central Salford has reduced by 88 per cent over the same period. That is 22 fewer incidents.

Blackfriars was launched in January 2009 and has involved high visibility patrols and crime reduction advice issued to residents and workers parking in the areas. Double yellow lines have been painted on Bury Street with the removal of pay and display machines and improved lighting. Middlewood Street has seen bollards placed in areas where vehicles were falling victim to thieves.

Superintendent David Wilkinson from Greater Manchester Police’s Salford Division said: “A mixture of the community removing valuables from their vehicle and prevention measures carried out by the Blackfriars partnership is obviously working. However, I would like to see the figures reduce even further, not just in these areas but across the whole of the city.

“I urge everyone to continue to take all valuable items out of their vehicle and make sure it is locked and an alarm set. Empty your glove compartment and leave it open so people can see nothing is in it. If you see any suspicious behaviour, such as people hanging around vehicles, please contact police.”

Councillor David Lancaster, Salford City Council’s lead member for community safety said: “We work hard with the police to ensure residents are aware of car crime and how to keep their valuables safe.

“I’m glad to see that the partnership is helping to reduce crime in the city while reminding people not to fall victim to such crime.”
