Police promise burglars a bleak winter
Greater Manchester Police arrested 708 criminals for burglary, theft, drug dealing and other crimes last week (17 to 23 October) in its latest crackdown on offenders across the county. Operation Reckoning saw enforcement action on all 12 divisions with officers making 110 raids on properties of suspected criminals to search for stolen goods. In 14 of these raids officers seized £79,635 under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) legislation. POCA allows police to seize cash in excess of £1,000 that they believe has been made from or will be used to fund criminal activity. The clampdown was Greater Manchester Police’s latest hard-hitting operation geared to targeting thieves and was launched to curb a potential pre-Christmas rise in burglary and other theft related crime. Policing operations like this have resulted in a 12 per cent decrease in burglaries across the county in the 12 months to the end of September 2011 when compared to the same period in the previous year equating to 2,255 fewer victims of this distressing crime. Detective Chief Inspector Julian Snowball who led Operation Reckoning said; “This week of action is the first of many clampdowns planned for the coming months to ensure that burglars and other criminals face a cold, hard winter and a bleak Christmas. “Burglary and related crimes can increase at this time of year as offenders use the dark evenings to target vulnerable homes. Criminals also tend to get more active in the run up to Christmas targeting homes that they know will be full of valuables intended as gifts for family and friends. “People can help us to keep their homes safe by locking all doors and windows, using burglar alarms and leaving a light on during the late afternoon and early evenings to deter thieves. “They can also help by reporting any suspicious activity either directly to us on 0161 872 5050 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.” Due to problems with spam only SalfordOnline members can now leave comments.
