Riot Damages Act claims - Greater Manchester Police Authority
Claims made under the Riots Damages Act following the August disturbances in Manchester and Salford are being progressed swiftly and robustly, say Greater Manchester Police Authority. The Police Authority received 381 claims, with a total value of approximately £5.7M. Three months on, since the 42 day window for submitting claims closed on 20 September 2011, GMPA has dealt with nearly 250 claims. This includes 74 offers of settlement, totalling more than £200,000. The Authority has also refuted 173 claims, as they are not eligible under the legislation. Twenty-three complex high value claims are currently being assessed by appointed loss adjusters MYI and progress on these is anticipated in January 2012. Cllr Paul Murphy, Chairman of GMPA, said: “The Government did raise concerns with all police authorities about the speed of managing Riot Damages Act claims. At talks with the Home Office on Tuesday, which included representatives from the insurance industry, GMPA was commended for our positive and proactive approach in this matter. We are confident that the right balance between due diligence and the use of public funds is being struck together with minimising the impact on local businesses.” Due to problems with spam only SalfordOnline members can now leave comments.
