Buile Hill, Swinton, St Patricks get exclusive access to Salford Royal
by Mark Bright
Salford Royal opened its doors to 20 year nine students for them to experience first hand the types of careers at the hospital, and to understand what skills and qualifications are needed to succeed. Nursing, medicine, and the science of healthcare were all on the agenda. Some of the sessions included visits to the hospital skills labs and mock ‘operating theatres’, where the students learned how to resuscitate a ‘patient’ with the help of a laryngoscope. Dr Andrew Robinson, Consultant Gastroenterologist at Salford Royal led the Discovering Medicine session and commented: “I have been very impressed by the enthusiasm and genuine commitment shown by students. I am thrilled to have been part of this initiative and I hope that the ‘behind the wards’ experience helped our local students with their career planning journey.” To mark the efforts and achievements of the students, an awards evening was hosted by Jim Potter, Chairman of Salford Royal and Dr. Nikos Savvas, Principal of Salford City College; all students were presented with a certificate of recognition. Upon presenting the certificates to the students, Jim Potter said: “The Trust is committed to helping young people gain the necessary experience to make informed choices about their future academic or employment opportunities. Well done to all students. We hope you prosper in your chosen career.” The discovery sessions took place every Wednesday (3.30pm – 5.00pm) from 27 January to 24 February 2010. The students were from: The Albion High School, Buile Hill High School, Swinton High School and St. Patrick’s RC High School. Dr. Nikos Savvas commented: “Opportunities like this are invaluable to the learning experience of all the students involved. It is important that young people are able to go on a journey of discovery when considering their future careers and programmes like this are an ideal way to engage them.” Photo: Buile Hill students learn to resuscitate the patient (L-R): Nicole Haney, Kieron Leonard and Brittany Dennis with Dr Andrew Robinson, Consultant Gastroenterologist at Salford Royal.
