Avoid unwanted gifts this year!
Party-goers in Salford are being urged to remember to take precautions and practice safe sex during their New Year celebrations.

The festive period is seen by sexual health charities as a high-risk period for both unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Marie Stopes International, one of the UK’s leading providers in sexual and reproductive health care services reported that this time last year, nearly a quarter of women aged between 16 and 24 had unprotected sex after drinking too much alcohol.

David Herne, Deputy Director of Public Health in Salford states: ‘There has been a great deal of work done in Salford to reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections and reduce the number of teenage pregnancies. Over the last two years, we are proud to have seen a massive 12% reduction in the number of teenage pregnancies. We want people to enjoy themselves during the celebrations, but to be safe and avoid any unwanted ‘gifts’ later.’

Cllr John Warmisham, Salford City Council lead member for adult social care and health said: ‘There are plenty of sexual health clinics right across the city where residents can get advice on what is best for them. We want people to enjoy themselves this Christmas and New Year without having to worry about compromising their longer term health.’

Salford has an extensive range of sexual health services designed to help everyone to stay safe over Christmas by providing both information and protection. The local sexual health services for young people aged under 25 through are provided Brook Salford and the services for those aged over 25 are provided through one of the local Sexual Health Clinics, held in six locations across Salford.

Both the adult and young person’s services offer free and confidential sexual health services including contraception, pregnancy testing, testing and treatment for STIs as well as other things.

If you think you have put yourself at risk, have symptoms of an STI or have had sex with someone who may have an STI, we would recommend you make an appointment for free, confidential testing and treatment at Salford’s specialist Goodman Sexual Health Clinic on 0161 212 5717.
