Walk For Longevity and Superior Health
Among women 75 to 84, the researchers found that 92% of the fastest walkers lived another ten years, while only 35 percent of the slowest walkers survived until then. In 2003, researchers at the Graduate School of Public Health at University of Pittsburgh found that walking for 30 minutes a day cut the risk of diabetes, regardless of whether they were fit or overweight. Seven years later, other researchers at Pitt found that walking at least six miles a week might keep our brains from shrinking as we age, and in turn preserve memory. And last January, another Pittsburgh study found a correlation between walking speed and longevity among 35,000 subjects over the age of 65. Among women 75 to 84, the researchers found that 92% of the fastest walkers lived another ten years, while only 35 percent of the slowest walkers survived until then. “We recommend walking as the ultimate fat burning activity,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH). “Stories abound of people who have shed their unwanted fat just by incorporating regular walking every day,” says Tom. “Walking requires just enough energy to easily source body fat. Sitting is not enough, and more strenuous aerobic exercise usually taps into your lean body mass. This alone should motivate you to start walking regularly and be up on your feet as much as possible. There are, however, many other health benefits associated with walking that you should be aware of.” Walking, say the Griesels, is our original and most natural mode of locomotion. It can be done anywhere and at any time, requiring only a comfortable pair of shoes. Start walking today and start your journey to a healthier, longer life.
