Salford students in drama over health issues
A series of drama workshops are taking place in schools across Salford to engage with young people about important health issues.

The workshops are being staged to get young people thinking about healthcare, and to provide pupils with an opportunity to influence the NHS in Salford.

Each workshop begins with a 15 minute drama sketch delivered by three professional actors. This is followed by a 45 minute discussion group, providing the students with an opportunity to discuss what they have seen and share their own experiences.

Two workshops are currently taking place throughout Salford;

Performance One – Under the weather

Based on two teenagers who are visiting their grandmother, who has been feeling ill. The teenagers want their grandmother to go to the doctors because of her dizzy spells. However, the grandmother would prefer to visit Accident and Emergency, even though she only has a headache.  The play clearly demonstrates the importance of choosing the right NHS service to receive the right treatment.

Performance Two – Does she eat her greens?

This play delivers a powerful message about young people having a voice.  Set in a doctor’s surgery about a young girl, accompanied by her mother, who is going to see her GP. The GP doctor is patronising towards the girl and talks directly to the mother about what is wrong with her daughter. This infuriates the girl and she feels the need to have her say!

Andrew Clough, Director of Clinical & Professional Leadership at NHS Salford, said; “At NHS Salford we are really keen to ensure we engage with the local community, including young people. All the pupils involved so far have shown a great appetite for sharing their opinions about the health issues that affect them, and it is up to us to listen and act on their suggestions.”

NHS Salford is working in partnership with the Ensemble 52 Theatre company to stage the drama workshops. Nine schools in Salford have signed up to the workshops, which began in November and are taking place throughout December, January and February.

Richard Vergette, co-director of the Ensemble 52 theatre group, said; “We have worked really closely with NHS Salford and schools in Salford to create workshops that appeal to the young people of Salford. The workshops are an opportunity for the students to learn about healthcare in their city through improvisation and discussion.”

Mrs Marie Garside, Headteacher at St Ambrose Barlow School, said; “We’ve enjoyed working with NHS Salford and Ensemble 52, and I think they have been impressed by the range of ideas and suggestions that have been coming from the pupils at St Ambrose Barlow. Young people are an important voice in the community, and it is encouraging that NHS Salford is listening.”
